The story in one page

Jim is a promising young seaman who ruins his career by abandoning a passenger ship he believes is sinking. Haunted by this moment of cowardice, he drifts through port cities, forever fleeing the memory of his failure. Eventually, he finds sanctuary in Patusan, a remote inland community, where he earns respect and local authority. However, his past catches up to him when a group of marauders threatens his adopted home. His attempt to resolve this new conflict goes wrong, leading to the death of a local leader's son and ultimately his own death at the hands of the grieving father.
