Anthem summary

The story in one page

Equality 7-2521 lives in a society where all personal identity has been erased for the sake of the collective. Assigned to be a street sweeper, he hides in an abandoned tunnel to perform unauthorized scientific experiments. When he attempts to present a light-bulb invention to the Council of Scholars, they reject it because he acted without their permission. Fleeing into the uncharted woods, he finds a house from the past and realizes his own worth as an individual. He discards the mandated 'we' in favor of the forbidden 'I' and plans to establish a new sanctuary for those who value their own existence.
