Two on a Tower summary

The story in one page

Lady Viviette Constantine, a young widow, secretly marries Swithin St. Cleeve, a local astronomer who prefers the firmament to his fellow man. When the marriage proves legally void and she finds herself pregnant, Viviette — fearful for Swithin’s budding career and struggling with poverty — accepts a marriage proposal from the Bishop of Melchester. Years pass as Swithin pursues science abroad, leaving Viviette to navigate social isolation and the strain of her hidden past. When Swithin finally returns as a man of status, the reunion occurs atop the tower where they once observed the stars. The sudden emotional surge of their encounter proves too much for Viviette’s long-suffering heart, ending their partnership in a final, irreversible silence.
