The Viper of Milan: A Romance of Lombardy summary

The story in one page

Gian Galeazzo Maria Visconti, the 'Viper' of Milan, has reduced Northern Italy to a personal chessboard. After crushing Verona and seizing Isotta d'Este, he toys with her husband, the exiled Mastino della Scala. Mastino gathers a fragile coalition of Italian lords and German mercenaries, but Visconti’s weapon is rarely the sword; he prefers the parchment of a false treaty or the whisper of a bribe. As the alliance fractures under the Duke's diabolical manipulation and Giacomo Carrara’s betrayal, the struggle shifts from the battlefield to the palace. The Duke’s cold cruelty eventually pushes his own loyal secretary, Giannotto, to a violent epiphany amidst the ruins of a conquered city.
